Historically SpeakingAs we start a new year, the Historical Society says thank you to the many individuals and businesses that made last year a historic success. In the coming year, the biggest project will be The Book, "The 9-Mile Square," which we want all families to participate in so that a hundred years from now your loved ones will be remembered in the history of Norwich, Bozrah, Franklin, Sprague, Lisbon, Preston, and Jewett City. The towns that made up the 9-mile square that was once all Norwich is the first history book that will go back to the beginning with a special focus on the last one hundred years. The society hopes to have programs the members and public can participate in. We failed to have such programs last year except for the historic re-entombment of Samuel and Martha Huntington. The Huntington tomb will be completed this year and re-dedicated on Saturday, July 16. We will be working with our Congressman, Rob Simmons, Governor Rell, Senators Dodd and Lieberman, and the Mohegan Tribe toward putting a grant together for the preservation of Norwich and surrounding historic treasures. Again, we thank the many who helped so much. We invite everyone to participate in The Book, "The 9-Mile Square," with photos or sponsorships. The Historical Society can be reached weekdays, except Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 886-1776. Our wish for you and yours is for a happy, healthy and successful new year.
