Historically SpeakingThe Norwich Historical Society is planning a weekend of history on Chelsea Parade. There will be a Civil War re-enactment and a re-dedication of the Soldiers' Monument. On Friday, the campsite will be set up on Chelsea Parade. On Saturday, after reveille, roll call and breakfast, the re-enactors will open their camp to the public at 9 a.m. The daily life of a sailor, with Lt. Commander Ezra Seals and Boy Third Class Robert Gordon will be presented from 9:30-10:30 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., there will be a bayonet drill, and after dinner, muskets of the Civil War and a demonstration by Don Hamel of the 27th Camp will take place. From 1:30-2:45 p.m., there will be a public demonstration of Civil War Infantry Tactics. The re-dedication of the Civil War Soldiers' Monument will take place at 3 p.m. Francis Archambeault, the Norwich Historical Society's Civil War expert, will re-dedicate and speak of Norwich's brave and important contribution during the Civil War. At 4 p.m., the Post Camp Guards will prepare supper, and the campsite will be open until 8:30. Saturday night, join the Army and Navy in a "candlelight" tour at Chelsea Parade, all presented by the Norwich Historical Society under the direction of Geoff McLean. On Sunday, Civil War soldiers on campaign can be seen at 11 a.m., the story of submarines in the Civil War will be offered from noon to 1 p.m. and, finally, the 27th will give public demonstrations from 1-2:30. Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts are asked to attend in uniform.
