Historically SpeakingIt's been a busy week for the Norwich Historical Society. Margot Gibbs, chairman of membership, announced that with renewals and new memberships, we are now well over 700 members; one of the largest societies in the state. Last week, on Chelsea Parade, the Norwich Historical Society presented Civil War re-enactments on both Saturday and Sunday under the direction of board member Geoff McLean and Don Hamel of the 27th Connecticut Volunteers. Last week also saw the finishing touches put on the Samuel Huntington tomb restoration. The restoration of the tomb itself cost $51,000, and another $20,000 -- most of it a gift from the Mohegan Tribe -- was used to make the site handicapped friendly and to present a level platform which would accommodate guests and tourists and be appropriate for official ceremonies. Special thanks to Joe Loyacano, director of Public Works, and all of his men who cooperated so completely in the restoration. A special program is being scheduled for July 16, the anniversary of Samuel Huntington's birth. Finally, the Historical Society received word from the Rev. Father Paul Kennington that the gravestone for Benedict Arnold has finally been placed in the wall marking, for the first time.
