Historically Speaking

This coming Sunday, the Norwich Historical Society, together with the Guns of Norwich, is sponsoring a cemetery walk which could be a glorious occasion with the fall foliage as a background.

The Yantic Cemetery, at two o'clock, will mark the beginning of the walk which will be led by David Oat, who heads the Historical Society's cemetery division. No one knows Norwich cemeteries and the history therein better than Dave. He has published a pamphlet on the Colonial Cemetery and will one day have other publications on Norwich cemeteries.

Sunday, he will be accompanied by Fran Archambeault who, with Duncan Stoddard, oversees the Civil War for the Historical Society. Fran and David will tell the history of those who are buried in Yantic Cemetery. Lafayette Foster's tomb will be the first. He was Senator from Connecticut, elevated to Vice President after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Governor William Buckingham, and the graves of the Norwich men and boys who suffered death in a prison camp and whose bodies were returned will also be visited. This coming Sunday, October 10th, will provide a walking tour of past history that will be long remembered, and everyone is invited without charge.

The Norwich Historical Society can be reached daily, except Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 886-1776.
