Historically SpeakingThe Norwich Historical Society last week sent a letter of congratulations and encouragement to Richard Chapman of the Norwich Grange for placing a historic plaque on the Bean Hill Green. The first historic plaque by the Grange was on Asylum Street recalling the tragic fire that took l6 lives at the city ' s poor farm and asylum. Mental patients, locked in their rooms, burned to death and were buried in what became Norwich ' s Paupers ' Field. The project of historic plaques, started by the Grange, continued when taken up by Bill Stanley and later transferred to the Norwich Historical Society. Some 25 plaques have been installed at historic sites throughout Norwich, and many others are being prepared to commemorate historic sites in Norwich. Meanwhile, the Norwich Historical Society continues its search for old photographs for the "Norwich Family Photo Album" that will be published next year. If you have treasures of family or neighborhood photos, or Norwich history, call for an appointment between ll:00 and 3:00, any day except Tuesdays, at the Norwich Historical Society's historic number - 886-l776.
