Historically SpeakingThe Norwich Historical Society is once again shifting its attention to the Samuel Huntington tomb in the Colonial Cemetery. Last year, the tomb, which had been in terrible disrepair, was completely renovated including reinforced steel to assure its preservation would last for many years. Bill Stanley, president of the society, said, "Though we have spent $3l,000, and the city has donated thousands in hours of labor, the job is only half done." Peg Wilson, on behalf of the society, applied for a grant from the R. S. Gernon Trust, and the society has been awarded $ l0,500, which is less than half of the amount needed. Joe Loyacano, Director of Public Works, is work ing with the Historical Society, to provide handicapped-access, historically styled, paved approachers. The final touches include a flagpole, where colors will fly day and night, and an additional stone which will declare Samuel Huntington, First President of the United States Under the Articles of Confederation in Congress Assembled. A financial appeal will be launched in July to solicit an additional $l5, 000 from local donors to complete the project.
