Historically SpeakingHistoric artífacts come from all over the country to the Norwich Historical Society. The most recent, all the way from McAllen, Texas. John Olenkiewicz, on the Internet, read Bill Stanley's column, "Once Upon A Time" concerning the anniversary of the Norwich Post Office building. He sent copies of original documents of the history of the post office dating back to February l9th of l78l, when the post office was established. There are other copies of letters going back before the establishment of the Norwich Post Office when, in 1779, before the United States was a country, Dudley Woodbridge of Norwich communicated with Boston Postmaster, Jonathan Hastings, thanking him for his assistance. Apparently, Ebenezer Hazard, the Postmaster General, was considering Norwich for a post office. Finally, the Postmaster General announced he was pleased to establish a post office in the town of Norwich. Copies of the document from John Olenkiewicz's collection, including letters from Samuel Huntington, will now be included in the Historical Society's archives. These valuable documents prove the Norwich Post Office is 223 years old and was established ten days before we became a nation, which occurred on March l, l78l. The Norwich Historical Society can be reached at 886-l776.
