SUMMARY:NHS Second Saturday Virtual Tour: Norwich's Millionaires' Triangle
DESCRIPTION:Important 2020 Update: \nDue to the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic and acting out of an abundance of caution\, the Norwich Historical Society has made the difficult decision to cancel the organization’s remaining programs for the 2020 calendar year. The Norwich Historical Society will not host physical Second Saturday Tours in July and August but will create virtual tours which will be accessible on our website and Facebook page. This is not a decision we have taken lightly\, but it was made with the safety of our volunteers and event participants in mind. \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— \nTHIS TOUR IS NOW VIRTUAL AND WILL BE ACCESSIBLE ON OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE: From 1850-1900\, Norwich\, Connecticut was one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. Join local author\, Tricia Staley\, as we step back in time for a stroll down the city’s most fashionable mile of millionaires’ mansions that spanned nearly half century of architectural design\, including Greek Revival\, Italianate\, and Richardson Romanesque. Along the way\, we’ll discuss the extraordinary people who lived in the houses – their tragedies\, triumphs\, and\, yes\, their scandals. Among them are Connecticut’s Governor\, a U.S. Senator and the captains of industry who lived in Norwich during the city’s Golden Age. \nTricia shares what she learned about their lives while researching her books Norwich in the Gilded Age and Norwich and the Civil War. After the tour\, please consider continuing your experience at The Slater Memorial Museum or by patronizing one of Norwich’s great restaurants. \nThe tour is free and open to the public.\nParking: Norwich Free Academy or around Chelsea Parade. \nThe walk is 1 mile and is moderate; there are some hills. There are no restrooms available and no dogs please. \nThe Millionaires’ Triangle is apart of the self guided Walk Norwich Trail System accessible via walknorwich.org \nThe walk is sponsored by The Norwich Historical Society – CT and Norwich Millionaires’ Triangle.
