SUMMARY:NHS Second Saturday Virtual Tour: Sailors\, Soldiers\, & Civilians: Norwich Notables of Oak Street Cemetery
DESCRIPTION:Important 2020 Update \nDue to the ongoing Covid-19 global pandemic and acting out of an abundance of caution\, the Norwich Historical Society has made the difficult decision to cancel the organization’s remaining programs for the 2020 calendar year. The Norwich Historical Society will not host physical Second Saturday Tours in July and August but will create virtual tours which will be accessible on our website and Facebook page. This is not a decision we have taken lightly\, but it was made with the safety of our volunteers and event participants in mind. \n——————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————————— \nTHIS TOUR IS NOW VIRTUAL AND WILL BE ACCESSIBLE ON OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE \nNHS Second Saturday Tour: Sailors\, Soldiers\, & Civilians: Norwich Notables of Oak Street Cemetery \nSaturday August 8\, 2020 10:00am \nPlease join us for a fascinating tour of one of Norwich’s colonial era cemeteries. Robert Niles\, who played an instrumental role in securing a Treaty of Alliance between the United States and France during the Revolutionary War. You’ll meet Capt. Ephraim and Lydia Huntington Bill\, the great\, great\, great grandparents of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Other prominent individuals buried here include Civil War Soldier\, George Ward\, who is one of the “Andersonville Nine” and the Harris family who were active in the anti-slavery movement in Norwich. You’ll learn about these Norwich notables and more on this tour! \nMeet at the entrance of the cemetery at the end of Arcadia Street (use 17 Arcadia Street as the address).\nParking is below in the lot on Cliff Street; walk up Arcadia Street to meet the tour at the cemetery entrance.\nPlease dress appropriately for the weather.
