SUMMARY:Cape Verdean History of Norwich
DESCRIPTION:From the late nineteenth\, immigrants from the islands of Cape Verde\, formed a small but vital community in Norwich\, CT. Most lived or grew up in one or two Cape Verdean communities\, Talman Street and Sunnyside Avenue. Cape Verdean Communities spoke a distinct Cape Verdean Kriolu\, which is a Portuguese-based Creole language\, enjoyed music performed by The Santos Brothers-Abel\, Tia\, Antonio; Jose’\, Manuel & Lena played Cape Verdean Music and the Delgado Brothers-Joseph\, Candido\, Anthony\, Frank who performed Jazz and ragtime in the late 1920’s. St. Anthony Chapel\, built by immigrant Joseph Candido Delgado and baptized on July 4\, 1926 as a symbol of the arrival\, establishment and settlement of Cape Verdeans in Norwich and the Cape Verdean Santiago Society Club\, incorporated on June 6\, 1939\, served as a focal point where Cape Verdeans gathered with their families\, shared their delicious cachupa\, jagacida\, etc.\, spoke their native language and enjoyed the music of their homeland. The Chapel was razed in 2004 and a replica rebuilt in 2006; the Club burned down in 2007; but the memories of Talman Street will live on forever as Cabo Verde Way! \nUse 14 Talman Street Norwich\, CT 06360 for the address.
