SUMMARY:Gideon’s Revolution and the Plot to Capture Benedict Arnold: Traitors\, Spies\, and Storytellers
DESCRIPTION:Join us as Brian Carso\, long-time professor of history at Misericordia University\, presents a program about the secret plot implemented by George Washington to capture Benedict Arnold following his treason at West Point\, and how this little-known spy mission is explored in his soon-to-be-released historical novel Gideon’s Revolution. \nGideon’s Revolution is an American origin story based on actual historical events\, an odyssey that reveals the profound human tensions between loyalty and betrayal\, allegiance and treason\, revenge and the possibility of forgiveness. This presentation delves briefly into the life of Benedict Arnold and the circumstances of his betrayal at West Point\, followed by an exploration of the known facts of Washington’s secret plot to capture Arnold. \nInterspersed with the historical narrative are brief readings from the corresponding parts of Gideon’s Revolution\, demonstrating how\, as the renowned novelist Hilary Mantel wrote\, “if we want to imagine not just how the past was\, but what it felt like\, from the inside—we pick up a novel.” \nThis event is sponsored by the Norwich Historical Society. The event will be held Friday September 22\, 2023\, at 6:00pm at the First Congregational Church at 81 East Town Street in Norwich. There will be a suggested donation of $5.00. Copies of the book will be available for sale.
