David Ruggles (1810–1849) grew up in the Bean Hill section of Norwich and was an abolitionist serving as a “conductor” on the Underground Railroad in New York City. In 1842, Ruggles claimed to have helped 600 individuals escape from slavery including abolitionist Frederick Douglass and former slave James L. Smith. Ruggles was an accomplished journalist and opened the first bookstore for African Americans in New York City in 1834.
