Frances Manwaring Caulkins (1795–1869) is celebrated as a genealogist, biographer and historian. She is renowned for writing the histories of Norwich and New London. She began her career as a schoolteacher and later she was the founder of the first female anti-slavery society in Norwich. She was the first woman elected to be a member of the oldest historical society in the United States, the Massachusetts Historical Society, in 1849.
