Uncas (1598-1683) was a Mohegan Sachem or head chief. The region’s indigenous balance of power experienced difficult pressures in the 1600’s and many tribal leaders disagreed on how best to address these issues. Uncas and his followers split from the Pequot Tribe and formed the Mohegan tribe because Uncas favored collaboration with the European settlers. Uncas’s alliance with the English was controversial. In appreciation of the aid the English rendered Uncas and the Mohegan Tribe following the Narragansett’s siege at Ft. Shantok, Uncas deeded the 35 European Norwich founding families a 9 by 9 square mile tract of land which became Norwich.
