City of Norwich to Hold Public Meeting Regarding Final Master Plan Design of the Uncas Leap Heritage Area

Mayor Deberey Hinchey is pleased to announce that the City of Norwich will hold a public meeting to solicit input from area residents regarding the grant funded final master plan design of the Uncas Leap Heritage Area in Norwich.

Acquired by the City of Norwich in 2010, the area has historical significance to the community and has remained a sacred part of Mohegan Tribe history since 1643. The 1.2-acre landmark along the Yantic River is the site of the culmination of the Battle of Great Plains between the Mohegan and Narragansett Tribes.

The meeting will be held Tuesday, October 10, 2017 from 6:30 p.m. -8:00pm in the Slater Auditorium on the Norwich Free Academy campus located at 305 Broadway. A presentation by the project consultant, Milone & MacBroom, will include an overview of the planning process and discussion concerning the vision for the site as a cultural heritage and tourism attraction.

The Uncas Leap Steering Committee is a collaboration of representatives from the City of Norwich, the Mohegan Tribe, the Norwich Historical Society and area residents. Funding for the project is made possible through the State of Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD), as well as by the City through federal Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds.
